"Fading Time" for Solo Marimba

This is a piece I wrote during my senior year of high school. It is based on two sticking patterns that repeat over a slowly developing chord progression. This solo is intermediate difficulty and can fit on a "low-A" marimba.

The Improvisational Technique of Éric Sammut

This is my dissertation which I wrote as part of my DM degree at Indiana University. Research for this paper included traveling to Paris to work with Mr. Sammut for a week. Writing was completed in September of 2016 and I defended my research in November of that year. This paper was truly a labor of love and I owe a debt of gratitute to Éric Sammut, who was incredibly generous with his time and energy during my research. I am pleased to make it available here.

Arranging for the Solo Marimbist: An Improvisational Approach

This is the handout from a presentation I gave at PASIC 2019 in Indianapolis, IN. It is based on information found in my dissertation (which can be downloaded above), as well as my own experience in arranging for solo marimba. The handout includes exercises and concepts that bridge the gap between practicing and arranging.

Snare Drum Warmup

I wrote this warmup routine and associated audio track for my Percussion Methods class at Middle Tennessee State University. It covers many fundamental techniques and is fun to play! Note: In the track, the cowbell cues the next exercise.

"Drop" Exercise

This sheet outlines a method for achieving total relaxation when playing mallet instruments. It highlights the importance of letting the mallets drop naturally, and emphasizes connecting the 'drop' and 'lift' portions of a stroke by first developing them separately and then gradually combining them.

This table identifies the properties of the modes of of the Major, Diminished, Whole-Tone, Melodic Minor, Harmonic Minor, Harmonic Major, and Hexatonic scales. A great resource if you're looking for fresh harmonic colors!

How to Learn a Tune (for drummers)

This document outlines a simple procedure drummers can use to help learn and interpret a standard jazz tune on the drum set. You can download the handout here, and you can also watch a demonstration of me following each step of the process!
